Shadows in Motion at Sri Lanka’s 77th Independence Day

Covering Sri Lanka’s 77th Independence Day for Reuters was a memorable and significant experience, as it was my first official Independence Day coverage. Honestly, I was a bit confused at first navigating the formal procedures, tight security, and making sure I didn’t miss any key moments. The day began early, with the President's security team conducting checks on my baggage and cameras before escorting me and other photojournalists to the designated location. As the ceremony unfolded, I focused on capturing the newsworthy moments essential for the story. After covering the key events, I shifted my attention to more creative perspectives. That’s when I noticed a group of dancers performing. At one point, as they leaped into the air, their shadows danced gracefully on the ground. I quickly reached for my Sony A7C II camera paired with a Sony 300mm f/2.8 prime lens. Anticipating their next jump, I patiently waited for the perfect moment. When it finally came, I pressed the shutter just in time to capture the elegant silhouette of the dancers mid-air. Camera settings: Shutter Speed: 1/3200 sec Aperture: f/3.2 ISO: 160. This photograph gained significant recognition, being published across Reuters social media platforms, featured in Reuters Pictures of the Week, and showcased on many leading news websites worldwide. It stands out to me because it captures not just the celebration but also the artistry and cultural essence of Sri Lanka. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most powerful stories are told in shadows and movement.
